We had planned to travel up into the Highlands for two nights. On Friday we were booked to stay at Fort William, then on Saturday we would go to Glenfinnan Viaduct to watch the Jacobite steam train from Harry Potter pass by, then on to Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, Inverness and Dornoch for the night. Unfortunately Storm Amy put a stop to these plans, and the Glenfinnan train was cancelled because of the weather anyway. However the silver lining of our adjusted plans was that we did get to see a lot more of southern Scotland than we expected.
By Sunday, Storm Amy had mostly passed, so we decided to take a day trip up into the eastern side of the Highlands and see how far we could get. We visited a farm with Highland coos, passed through Perth and Inverness, and stopped to explore Dornoch as our final destination.
As anticipated, the scenery was breathtaking, and varied quite a bit as we moved through different areas and headed further north. The weather also varied - some places had beautiful sunshine and others were grey and misty.
We spotted an oil rig just south of Dornoch, which was something I had never seen before.
We were glad we got to spend at least the day in the Highlands. We’d like to go to our planned destinations in the western Highlands next time we visit, as well as to the Isle of Skye.
