The Vennel Steps, Edinburgh

The Vennel Steps are an historic staircase which climbs a hill across from Edinburgh Castle, offering spectacular views across Edinburgh Old Town to the castle. Even though it’s a popular spot for tourists, we managed to get some nice shots on our day out in Edinburgh.

The Vennel was once a slippery alleyway where children used to guide people with candles for safe passage, and the 77 step staircase was built in the 20th century for increased safety. The Flodden Wall that runs alongside it that is in the background of our photos was completed in 1560.
