Falkirk Wheel

We were lucky to arrive at the Falkirk Wheel, the only rotating boat lift in the world, just as a long boat was approaching – see our video below. In low tech terms, the wheel mechanically lowers and raises boats 35 metres between the Union Canal above, and the Forth and Clyde Canal below, within a few minutes.

Previously the journey between the canals took an entire day, requiring boats to navigate 11 locks and 44 lock gates. The route was closed from the 1930s until the Falkirk Wheel was opened in 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II, reconnecting Glasgow and Edinburgh via these two major waterways. We also saw the Forth and Clyde canal further east when we visited the Kelpies.

Anyone interested in engineering would find the mechanics, design and technical considerations of the wheel fascinating – see details.

The Falkirk Wheel is a major tourist attraction, receiving thousands of visitors each year. This time we watched it in action, but next time we visit I would definitely like to try it out as a passenger.
