Down an unassuming alley way near Oxford University is a meeting place which has been visited by many legends since its establishment in around 1381. Now known as the Turf Tavern, it was closed when we were there, but even just walking down St Helen's Passage to find it, and reading the honour role in the beer garden, was quite an eye opening experience.
Famous visitors have included:
Showbiz greats
Including Emma Watson, David Bowie, Ben Kingsley, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor
Literary and academic greats
Including JRR Tolkien, Stephen Hawking, CS Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, Oscar Wild and Thomas Hardy
Political figures
Including Bob Hawke, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Boris Johnson, David Cameron and Bill Clinton.
Thought to be Oxford's oldest pub, I can only imagine the conversations that must have taken place here over the centuries!
