When we were booking our accommodation, we decided we wanted to stay at a farm somewhere along the way. We found a nice looking farmstay in Yorkshire, however when we arrived, we quickly discovered that the pictures didn't nearly do it justice. It reminded me of the farm scenes in All Creatures Great and Small – it was just divine!
This 100 acre sheep farm was nestled in a lush green valley with views to die for. We were up before dawn so getting to watch the sun rise up over the valley in the east was a truly magical experience.
The farmhouse was originally built in the mid-1700s and had been extended and renovated over the years. It was beautifully presented, with so many thoughtful and quirky touches. It snows here in winter so it was easy to imagine curling up inside with a good book and looking out onto the valley covered in white.
The road into the property was picturesque with lovely old dry stone wall fences. Being narrow in some spots, all of that hedge road practice down in south-west England definitely helped!
The farm was located near the village of Danby in North Yorkshire, about half an hour inland of Whitby, which is on the coast of the North Sea. (For the record, All Creatures Great and Small was filmed in Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales, which is a couple of hours south-east of here.)
On our way here we drove along a ridgeline, and it was interesting to observe that the landscape was quite a different to when we drove down into the valley (seventh last photo below). It was flatter and the vegetation appeared dryer, plus there were a few loose livestock so we took it slow!
Although we were not here for long, it is easily the sort of place where you could spend a few days just soaking in the serene countryside in every direction. It really is a beautiful part of the world.
