Cottage in Newhaven (Edinburgh)

We stayed for two nights in a lovely 18th century cottage in Newhaven, a northern suburb of Edinburgh. The cottage had been fully renovated and was very comfortable, still maintaining its authentic historic charm.

Newhaven was once a small fishing village on the Firth of Forth, a major estuary that runs along the north of Edinburgh. We took a walk to the Newhaven harbour, marina and historic lighthouse.

In the 1400-1500s Newhaven and neighbouring Leith became a shipbuilding precinct due to the deep port. Naval vessels were built here, including the mighty Great Michael warship for King James IV in 1511. See a model of the Great Michael in the last photo above.
