The Writers’ Museum is in Lady Stair’s House, an historic townhouse built in 1622. It is located in Lady Stair’s Close, an alleyway just off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
The museum pays tribute to the lives of three major Scottish authors – Robert Burns, Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. It has some of their rare and personal items on display, including original handwritten manuscripts, first editions of some of their classic novels, portraits, Burns’s writing desk and a printing press used for some of Scott’s novels.
Unfortunately the museum was closed on our day out in Edinburgh, however there were still plenty of people milling around. Seeing the building from the outside and exploring the historic close was still interesting and worthwhile. Definitely one for the list for a future visit.
